Athletes Foot Information

Athletes Foot is caused by a fungus that grows on or in the top layer of skin. Fungi grows best in warm, moist places such as the area between the toes. Athletes Foot spreads easily and you can get it by touching the toes or feet of a person already suffering from it. Most people get it by walking barefoot on contaminated surfaces such as swimming pools or changing rooms.

Athletes Foot can make your feet and the skin between your toes burn and itch. The skin may peel and crack leaving the sufferer in pain or discomfort. The symptoms depend on the severity of the infection. If left untreated it can develop into cracked, blistered skin that may become secondarily infected with bacteria. You may find that the infection spreads from the skin between the toes to the toenails, soles and sides of the feet. 

At InStep Podiatry we can diagnose athletes foot by physical inspection of your feet. If diagnosed then treatment for the infection will be initiated and we will offer long term advice on how to prevent the spread and reoccurrence of the infection. If your Athletes Foot appears unusual, or resistant to the treatment you may be referred to your GP for further investigation.

The risk of developing Athletes Foot can also depend on your general health. People who have diabetes are at greater risk of developing fungal problems.
