Calluses are areas of thick, hardened, dead skin that form to protect the skin and structures from pressure, friction or injury.

Calluses generally form on the hands or feet, although they may form wherever there is pressure on the skin. This can include the knees or elbows of an individual. A small amount of callus on the hands and feet of any active person is quite normal. They may appear grey or yellowish in colour, feel lumpy and be less sensitive to touch than other areas of the skin.

Calluses become a problem when they grow thick or large enough to cause discomfort. The treatment for a callus is to remove pressure or friction by wearing properly fitting footwear and using protective padding to cushion the callus. The callus can also be softened and the dead skin removed by pain free debridement.

If you suffer with Diabetes, Peripheral Arterial Disease, Peripheral Neuropathy, or other conditions that cause circulatory problems or numbness then is it essential that you seek advice from a fully qualified and registered Chiropodist/Podiatrist before receiving any treatment for calluses.

InStep Podiatry will reduce and remove calluses using safe and proven techniques.
