Biomechanics is an area of podiatry that specialises in preventing, diagnosing and treating injuries in joints and muscles that are caused by the way we stand and walk (knows as gait).

Biomechanics are important in treating musculoskeletal problems effectively. When diagnosing biomechanical problems it is necessary to recognise where the weight load on the body is greatest whilst the patient is walking and running. We are looking at weight load, the way the foot twists and the way the muscles, bones and soft tissues interact for each movement.

The field of biomechanics can be diverse and embraces further specialities such as Sports Injuries and Podopaediatrics.

Who can benefit from a Biomechanical Assessment?

Anyone who walks can benefit from some input with regards to their gait and posture. However, the majority of clients who present to the clinic are suffering with symptoms or pain that they feel originates from their stance, walking patterns or a recent injury.

At Instep Podiatry we welcome all types of client referral. You can contact the clinic directly and book an appointment or alternatively be referred by; your GP, Consultant Physician/Surgeon and/or an Allied Health Professional (Physiotherapist, Osteopath, Chiropractor ect).

What common problems occur?

We regularly see clients with low arches, high arches, knock knees, bow legs, foot pain, ankle pain, lower limb or back pain. These can be chronic, acute or overuse problems.

Video Gait Analysis

At Instep Podiatry we are proud to be the first podiatry clinic in Chester and North Wales to offer Video Gait Analysis. Video analysis assists us to diagnose your condition by looking at the way the bones, muscles and associated structures (tendons and ligaments) align and interact. We will also need to take a medical history to see if any other systemic factors may be influencing your skeletal balance.

We will also look at factors such as stability, body posture and other musculoskeletal factors. We will take into account the type of activities you participate in and provide advice on stretching and strengthening exercises.

If necessary we will provide Orthotics or Specialist Insoles to correct any significant standing, walking or postural problems.

We may also refer you for X-rays or other investigations and tests to assist with diagnosis.
